Historic Tree Grove: Ray Charles Live Oak

Southern Live Oak
Southern Live Oaks (Quercus virginiana) are large deciduous trees native to the southeastern U.S. from Virginia to Florida and west to Texas. This is one of the iconic trees of the "Old South", frequently dripping with Spanish moss and dominating the landscape. The shiny green leaves are lost late each winter or early spring, replaced immediately with fresh soft green growth. Acorns from this tree are beloved by squirrels, who frequently use the large trees for nests as well.

Ray Charles
Blind since the age of six, Ray Charles studied composition and learned many instruments at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. He played with a band called The Florida Playboys in Tampa in his early years, where he first wore his trademark sunglasses on stage. Charles pioneered soul music in the 1950s and helped integrate country and pop music in the 1960s. His hits include “Georgia on My Mind” and “I Got a Woman.” Ray Charles died June 10, 2004. Learn more about him here.
Ray Charles Live Oak
The Ray Charles Live Oak grows in St. Augustine, Florida , at the school where the renowned musician received his education. Our Ray Charles Live Oak is a seedling from that tree.

  2. Sheila, I am so glad that you like our little garden which is part of the Richard T Bowers Historic Tree Grove at MOSI.

Your father was an amazingly talented musician with an incredible ability to overcome the odds. I am so happy we have this tree in the gardens to represent his success.

My best to your whole family.

    Sincerely,
    Kristen
