Last week, we took a few hours off from weeding and sweating to go visit Lockhart Elementary School near downtown Tampa. The school is planning to build an enclosed butterfly garden next year, and wanted some advice on how best to go about it. While we were there consulting, we got a bit of a tour and learned about some of the ways this unique school sets itself apart.
Lockhart Elementary is a charter school focusing on “Creative Science”, where kids get a lot of hands-on experience as they work toward “Problem Solving to Engineer the Future”. We saw a neat display of projects kids completed as they learned about the butterfly lifecycle, as seen in the pictures below.
By next fall, Lockhart hopes to have a small section of their courtyard turned into a screened-in butterfly garden enclosure, where they can raise monarchs throughout the year in a natural setting and kids can observe the lifecycle up close.
