Friday Favorites: Central Florida Species

Florida has several hundred species of butterflies and moths, and we’re lucky enough to see many of them here at BioWorks. It can be hard to pick favorites among them, but we’ve narrowed down our personal best-loved butterflies, moths, and caterpillars from our local species.

Kristen’s Picks:

Butterflies:
Red-Spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) and Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)

Moth: Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis)

Caterpillars:
“For looks - Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus). But White Peacocks (Anartia jatrophae) because they float.” (Check out the video below from Elizabeth’s Secret Garden to see what she means.)

Butterfly: Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) and White Peacock (Anartia jatrophae)

Moths: Hummingbird Clearwing (Hemaris thysbe)

Caterpillar: Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) – One caterpillar, so many looks!
