In the garden just behind the butterfly exhibit we have a stack of tires that have been turned into planters. These planters are great for vegetables and host plants that need some rich soil and a bit more care. For the winter we have planted them as a butterfly lure.
Collard Greens: Host for the Great Southern White butterfly.
Milkweed: Host for Monarch and Queen butterflies.
Pink Pentas: Tasty nectar for all of our butterfly. visitors.
We are already finding Monarch eggs on the milkweed and hopefully we'll see some eggs on the collards as well.
While clearing out the plants from summer I found a four foot long snake skin tucked just under the lip of one of the tire planters. Apparently this is a fantastic place to relax and then shed your skin.
