Last week while Jill and I were walking past a Walter's Viburnum, a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth (Hemaris thysbe) swooped in and laid an egg right in front of us. Being diligent bug ladies, we accepted this gift and trundled the pearly green egg back to the lab.
Today the caterpillar is about an inch long and still growing, munching away on Walter’s Viburnum (Viburnum obovatum).
Check out this post for a picture of what the Hummingbird Clearwing Moth caterpillar will become. The adult moths are very neat looking and move just like hummingbirds. Their flying is fantastic.
