Carolina Wren Nest Update
Our eggs have hatched! All three of the eggs hatched as of April 26, and the nestlings are now covered in downy feathers though their eyes remain closed. They respond to loud chirping noises by opening their mouths. We haven’t seen a lot of feeding activity from the parents, but it’s not uncommon for birds to focus that activity in the morning and evening. Carolina Wrens eat mostly insects, so it would make sense for them to forage for food for their youngsters when insect activity is highest. Here are a couple of pictures; only two of the nestlings are clearly visible, but we didn't want to get to close to the nest. (Here are some tips for observing nesting birds safely, by the way.)
